Empowering Families with Life Skills at St. Marks CME Church

Cooking for the Soul

At St. Marks CME Church, the "Food for the Soul" program offers a diverse range of classes. These include cooking, nutrition, gardening, and financial literacy. Through these courses, families are equipped with the fundamental tools needed to lead healthier and more connected lives. As Black Cultural Initiative Founder Talicia Brown emphasizes, "Long-term health and viability depend on our children knowing how to feed themselves and their families. This is a wonderful opportunity for children and families to come together and have fun while learning these important skills." In 2025, the cooking classes will be relocated to Cascade Middle School, which boasts a state-of-the-art culinary arts classroom. This new setting will provide an even more immersive learning experience for the participants.

Nutrition for the Family

Understanding the importance of good nutrition is crucial for a family's well-being. The "Food for the Soul" program recognizes this and offers in-depth classes on nutrition. Participants learn about balanced diets, the importance of different food groups, and how to make healthy food choices. By imparting this knowledge, the program aims to help families build a foundation of healthy eating habits that will benefit them for a lifetime. Families come together in these classes, sharing ideas and experiences, and learning from one another. It becomes a community effort towards better health.

Gardening for Growth

Gardening is not only a fun activity but also a valuable life skill. The "Food for the Soul" program includes gardening classes that teach families how to grow their own food. They learn about different plant varieties, soil preparation, and proper watering techniques. By engaging in gardening, families connect with nature and gain a sense of self-sufficiency. It also promotes healthy eating as they can enjoy the fruits (literally) of their labor. These gardening classes bring families closer together as they work side by side in the garden, sharing the joys and challenges of growing their own food.

Financial Literacy for the Future

In addition to physical skills, the "Food for the Soul" program also focuses on financial literacy. Families learn about budgeting, saving, and managing their finances effectively. This knowledge is essential for their long-term financial stability. Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, participants gain a better understanding of how to make informed financial decisions. It empowers them to take control of their financial futures and build a solid foundation for their families. These financial literacy classes provide a valuable resource for families, helping them navigate the complex world of finance with confidence.
