The Shepherd’s Table food pantry and community kitchen in Conway, S.C. play a crucial role by serving hundreds of people each week. Dane Hanna, the director, emphasizes the growing need as communities expand. “I think just where communities are growing faster like it is in Conway and in this area of South Carolina, I feel like the needs grow also,” Hanna said.

How The Pantry Operates

The pantry offers a unique service where folks can check in and then browse through a store-like setup to pick what they need. From fresh produce to canned items and even a sweet treat, it provides a wide range of options. This system ensures that each person can obtain the essentials they require.

It's not just about providing food; it's about giving people a sense of dignity and choice. As Hanna said, “The pantry allows folks to check in, then go through the store and pick what they need...” This approach makes a significant difference in the lives of those who rely on the pantry.

Volunteering and Donations

Both volunteering and donations are essential for the pantry to continue serving the community. Volunteer Roy Winstead understands the importance of giving back. “I have a mission, you know, outside of myself,” he said. He helps out because he has been in a similar situation himself. “There was a period of time in my life where I was homeless also, you know, and throughout that period of being homeless, I can honestly say that the shoes that they’re in, I’ve been in also,” he added.

Hanna also stressed the need for donations. “We always need things like dry goods and foods like Hamburger Helper, which go a long way,” he said. “Any of the like dry goods, household goods, cleaning supplies, everything that adds up for an average family.” These donations help meet the daily needs of the community.

Meeting Needs Beyond the Holiday Season

Winstead emphasized that the need is not limited to the holiday season. “Give, give don’t wait till December, give. You have an opportunity to help someone help someone up. Don’t put people down, help them,” he said. This shows the continuous demand for support throughout the year.

The pantry is in need of grocery bags as well. Hanna mentioned that if you'd like to help, donations and the bags can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This simple act of providing bags can make a big difference in the efficiency of the pantry.

Encouraging Community Involvement

In addition to donations and grocery bags, Hanna encouraged folks to volunteer and give a hand up to their neighbors. By getting involved, people can make a real impact on the lives of those in need. “More information on The Shepherd’s Table can be found here,” he added, providing a way for the community to get more involved.

The Shepherd’s Table is not just a place to get food; it's a community hub that brings people together to support one another. Through the efforts of the director, volunteers, and the community, it continues to make a difference in the lives of many.
