The upcoming food distribution event, Feed the Boro’s February Food Drop, is set for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Statesboro High School. Organized by Statesboro Food Lion and The Islands, this initiative aims to provide essential food supplies to over 1,000 families in Bulloch County. In partnership with Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and sponsored by CORE Credit Union and GAF, the event will run from 8 AM to 10 AM or until all food has been distributed. This endeavor reflects a community's commitment to ensuring that no one goes hungry, especially in a county where nearly one-third of the population faces food insecurity.
To ensure a smooth operation, volunteers are required to arrive by 7:45 AM for a safety briefing. Participants must have their vehicles prepared with trunks open and cleaned out for efficient loading. SUVs should also ensure rear access is clear. Volunteers will not handle personal belongings within vehicles, emphasizing the importance of preparation to maintain flow and efficiency. Parking is available across the street in the Big Lots lot. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended for all volunteers.
The distribution process involves cars moving slowly through designated stations without stopping, allowing volunteers to load food items into waiting vehicles. Proper vehicle preparation is crucial as it prevents delays and ensures each family receives the full allocation of food. With the goal of providing enough meals for a week, the event organizers stress the importance of readiness to maximize the impact of this initiative. Families receiving assistance can expect two meals a day for seven days, supporting them through challenging times.
Bulloch County faces significant challenges with a staggering 29% poverty rate, meaning almost one-third of its residents may struggle with hunger. Feed the Boro plays a pivotal role in alleviating this issue by organizing regular food drops that supply essential groceries to those in need. The community's support is vital to sustain these efforts, highlighting the importance of collective action in addressing local food insecurity.
Volunteers and sponsors are integral to the success of Feed the Boro. For those unable to volunteer, financial contributions offer another meaningful way to help. A donation of $15 can feed a family of three for a week, while larger donations can assist even more families. Thanks to generous sponsors, the cost per person for a week's worth of groceries is approximately $5. Contributions can be made via check or online, ensuring that every dollar helps combat hunger in Bulloch County. Through continued support, Feed the Boro remains committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.
