The Unexpected Strain on Local Shelters
Winter usually brings a lull in animal admissions, but this year has been different. The Delta Animal Shelter, for instance, is bracing against unprecedented demand. Normally, this period would see fewer animals housed, but currently, all dog and cat kennels are occupied. Vonnie Bruce, the shelter's Operation Coordinator, explained that they have 41 dogs and puppies but only 26 kennels available. This overcrowding has led to a significant strain on resources. The shelter also houses three litters of kittens and another pregnant cat, further complicating matters. The situation is similar at the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter in Manistique. Patricia, the shelter’s Director, mentioned that they too are experiencing a high volume of animals waiting for adoption. While December traditionally sees heightened community awareness and generosity towards animal welfare, the need remains urgent. Both shelters are working tirelessly to manage the unexpected surge in animal intake, relying heavily on public support to sustain operations.Critical Needs for Animal Care
To cope with the increased number of animals, shelters are rapidly depleting their supplies. At Delta, canned dog food is in dire need as it serves multiple purposes—feeding puppies, administering medication, and encouraging reluctant eaters. For the growing kitten population, wet canned food is essential. Additionally, unscented scoopable cat litter, hard cat food like Purina Cat Chow and Kitten Chow, and other basic necessities are running low. Cleaning supplies such as Lysol and bleach are also vital for maintaining hygiene in the crowded living conditions. Bruce highlighted that used blankets, sheets, and pillowcases are welcome donations, provided pillows are excluded due to the risk of damage by dogs. In Manistique, Eva Burrell requires cat litter, paper towels, Purina Complete cat food, Bully Sticks, and rice-based dog foods like Diamond Lamb. Every item contributes significantly to the daily care of the animals.Making Donations Easy and Impactful
For those unable to provide supplies, there are alternative ways to contribute. Returnables such as cans and bottles can be donated, with volunteers collecting and returning them for the shelter's benefit. Monetary donations are equally valuable, with both shelters offering convenient methods for contributions. Delta accepts PayPal donations through its website, while Eva Burrell takes credit card payments over the phone and welcomes checks mailed to their address. The importance of fostering cannot be overstated. With shelters operating beyond capacity, fostering offers temporary relief and gives animals a chance at better socialization. Patricia emphasized the significance of responsible pet adoption, urging potential owners to thoroughly research before committing. Spaying and neutering pets is also critical for managing overpopulation and reducing the burden on shelters.A Grateful Community Partnership
Both shelters express immense gratitude for the ongoing support from their communities. Bruce praised the responsiveness of Escanaba residents, noting that calls for assistance are met with generosity. Similarly, Patricia acknowledged the kindness shown during the holiday season. The dedication of staff and volunteers ensures that anyone seeking advice or help regarding pet care can receive prompt assistance. Together, these efforts underscore the power of community collaboration in making a difference for vulnerable animals.
