In times of crisis, food becomes more than nourishment—it becomes a lifeline. This is the mission of Neighbors in Need, an initiative born out of necessity and driven by compassion.
The genesis of Neighbors in Need dates back to 2020 when a devastating tornado wreaked havoc on Jonesboro, Arkansas. It was during this catastrophe that Tommy Crowell, Bradley Dillon, and Aaron Kious recognized a critical gap in disaster relief efforts. While many organizations focused on cleanup and supply distribution, there remained an urgent need for hot meals to sustain the community.
Dillon’s access to a smoker trailer combined with Crowell’s ability to secure substantial food donations set the foundation for their operation. Their first major effort saw them partnering with Sam’s Club, which generously donated approximately $5,000 worth of goods. This collaboration enabled them to provide essential nutrition to those who had lost so much in the aftermath of the storm.
What began as a one-time response to a local emergency evolved into a recurring service. According to Dillon, while Neighbors in Need does not operate continuously, they are prepared to mobilize swiftly whenever severe weather events occur. Over the years, they have responded to multiple crises across various regions including Trumann, Wynne, Cave City, and most recently, Lake City.
This adaptability underscores the importance of having flexible systems in place to address unpredictable disasters. By maintaining readiness through strategic planning and resource management, Neighbors in Need ensures that no community faces hunger alone during its darkest hours.
The backbone of Neighbors in Need lies in the dedication of its founders. Both Crowell and Dillon attribute their success to fortunate circumstances that allow them to balance professional responsibilities with humanitarian work. “Our careers, our work allows us to do what they need for the community,” explained Crowell, highlighting the unique alignment between personal opportunity and public service.
Beyond logistics, the emotional impact of their efforts cannot be overstated. As Dillon pointedly noted, “A lot of these restaurants are without power, a lot of people lost a lot of stuff and just need a hot meal to help them, maybe give them some comfort to help them get through.” This sentiment reflects the deeper purpose behind their actions—to restore a sense of normalcy amidst chaos.
A cornerstone of Neighbors in Need’s sustainability is their enduring partnership with Sam’s Club. For years, this organization has consistently provided vital resources, enabling Neighbors in Need to scale their operations effectively. Dillon expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Sam’s Club, acknowledging their pivotal role in sustaining the initiative.
Looking ahead, the vision for Neighbors in Need extends far beyond immediate disaster responses. The team envisions continuing their outreach indefinitely, expanding their reach and capacity to assist even greater numbers of individuals in need. Such aspirations underscore a profound commitment to fostering resilient communities capable of overcoming adversity together.
