In a heartwarming display of community spirit, local organizations and volunteers joined forces to provide an unforgettable holiday shopping experience for underprivileged children. This event, organized by dedicated School Resource Officers (SROs), DECA students, Sheriff’s Cadets, and various volunteers, allowed dozens of young shoppers to select Christmas gifts with the guidance and support of law enforcement officers and mentors.

Empowering Youth Through Generosity and Compassion

A Unique Opportunity for Young Shoppers

The annual Shop with the Sheriff event provided a memorable opportunity for approximately 35 elementary and middle school students from Rutherford County Schools. These young participants were carefully chosen to spend quality time with SROs and DECA students, who accompanied them through Walmart on Old Fort Parkway. The excitement was palpable as each child explored aisles filled with toys, games, and gifts, guided by their enthusiastic mentors.Owen, one of the participating students, expressed his excitement about selecting a remote-controlled car for his father. "My dad would love that," he said, reflecting on the joy of choosing a thoughtful gift. Matt Powell, an SRO, agreed wholeheartedly, noting that such items hold special significance for parents and children alike. The interaction between Owen and Powell highlighted the personal connections forged during this event, making it more than just a shopping trip but a meaningful bonding experience.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Support

The success of this initiative hinged on the collaborative efforts of numerous organizations and individuals. Santa Claus greeted the children upon arrival, adding a magical touch to the day. Members of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Association served breakfast to the kids, ensuring they were well-fed and ready for the day’s activities. Throughout the event, deputies, officers from other agencies, and volunteers were present to assist the young shoppers, creating a safe and supportive environment.Kingston, another participant, chose Spiderman-themed items, driven by his passion for the superhero. His mentor, SRO Matt Tucker, remarked, "He loves Spiderman." This personalized attention ensured that each child could find gifts that truly resonated with their interests. Some students opted to buy presents for their parents or siblings, demonstrating a sense of responsibility and thoughtfulness. Others spent considerable time deliberating over their favorite choices, savoring the moment and the freedom to decide.

Celebration and Gratitude

As the shopping concluded, the children received a standing ovation from Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh, Chief Deputy Keith Lowery, Deputy Chief Britt Reed, Deputy Chief Steve Spence, and Deputy Chief Kevin Henderson. The applause echoed through the store, celebrating not only the gifts but also the spirit of giving and community solidarity. Sgt. Dustin Cox, who coordinated the event, expressed gratitude to Toot’s restaurants in Murfreesboro and their customers for their generous donations during the annual fundraising campaign. Cox also thanked Walmart on Old Fort Parkway for hosting the event and Seven Brew Coffee, Donut Country, and McDonald’s on Almaville Road for donating food and drinks. He acknowledged the contributions of all SROs, deputies, Santa, Blackman DECA students, Sheriff’s Cadets, Alumni Association members, and volunteers. Their collective efforts transformed a simple shopping trip into a transformative experience for these young lives, embodying the true meaning of the holiday season.
