On a significant Tuesday in November 2024, over 20 passionate colleagues from Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and Jefferson Health came together for a remarkable volunteer day at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Nazareth. This collaborative effort brought together 9 colleagues from LVHN and 12 from Jefferson. The day was filled with purpose as they dedicated themselves to sorting and packing donated food that would later be distributed to families facing hunger across a six-county region.

Colleagues' Volunteerism Transforms Food Bank Support

Meeting the Community's Needs

Picture opening a box of food and discovering your beloved spices within, adding that touch of home to your meals. This personal touch was precisely what the Second Harvest Food Bank food boxes received on that Tuesday. The LVHN and Jefferson teams donated spices, condiments, and other culturally representative ingredients that are in high demand at local food pantries. These additions ensure that individuals have the ingredients to prepare meals that reflect their traditions and preferences, reinforcing the health system's dedication to providing culturally responsive care and inclusivity.

By including these special items, the food bank is able to better meet the diverse needs of the community, providing not just sustenance but also a sense of connection to one's cultural heritage.

Providing Food and Education

The team's work with Second Harvest is an integral part of a broader commitment to addressing local food insecurity. Second Harvest Food Bank's mission is to end hunger in eastern Pennsylvania by collecting, storing, and distributing food to those in need within the six-county service area. They play a crucial role in supporting over 390 member agencies and distribution partners, such as food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens, which rely on their network to feed local families.

In addition to delivering food supplies, Second Harvest also focuses on educating the public about food insecurity and advocating for policies that ensure equitable access to food resources. This comprehensive approach helps to create a more sustainable food system and improve the well-being of the community.

Supporting Our Community

This meaningful day of service marks the beginning of what the organizations hope will be a lasting partnership to support regional food security. It fosters community connections and builds a shared sense of purpose among LVHN and Jefferson colleagues. The experience highlights the importance of community health beyond the confines of hospitals and clinics, demonstrating that healthcare providers can have a significant impact on supporting the wellness and resilience of the communities they serve.

In recognition of Jefferson's bicentennial milestone, the health system launched the Bicentennial Service Initiative in January. This massive volunteer effort aims to give back to the communities they serve and surpass their goal of 200,000 volunteer hours by the end of 2024. The collaboration with Second Harvest is a tangible step towards achieving this goal and making a lasting difference in the lives of those in need.
