Colby Women’s Tennis Team Battles in NESCAC Championship

In Middletown, Connecticut, the Colby Women’s Tennis team engaged in a competitive match at Wesleyan University as part of the 2025 NESCAC Championship. As the seventh-seeded team, the Mules faced off against the second-seeded Cardinals. Despite putting up a valiant fight, the Mules fell short in both doubles and singles play, concluding their season with an overall record of 7-10. With no seniors graduating, the team looks forward to strengthening their lineup next year.

The doubles segment saw a series of intense exchanges. The Cardinals initiated the action with a decisive 6-2 victory at the top position. However, Colby swiftly retaliated through the combined efforts of sophomore Jade Finestone and first-year Waka Aida, who secured a commanding 6-2 win at the third spot. The pivotal contest unfolded at the second position where junior captain Amelie Gal and first-year Ella Novion engaged in a seesaw battle. Though they managed to trade breaks effectively, the duo narrowly succumbed to the Cardinals in a tiebreaker, losing 7-6(5).

Moving into singles play, the momentum remained with the Cardinals, who captured the opening set across all courts. At the second singles slot, Wesleyan clinched a straight-set victory, advancing the score to 2-0. Adding pressure, the Cardinals also triumphed at the sixth singles position in straight sets, bringing them one point away from securing the match. Ultimately, Wesleyan sealed the deal with another straight-set win at the fifth singles spot, finalizing the match at 4-0.

Though unable to achieve an upset against the highly ranked Cardinals, the Colby Women’s Tennis team demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the championship. Looking ahead, the absence of graduating seniors ensures continuity for the Mules, who eagerly anticipate bolstering their roster with new recruits. This upcoming addition promises growth and improvement, building on the foundation laid this season.
