Kimberly Souther's Vision and Collaboration
Kimberly Souther, a Doctor of Musical Arts from James Madison University, previously collaborated with Sandeep Das as a cellist in the acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble and Global Musicians Workshop. Her passion for eclectic programming and expanding musical boundaries led her to approach Das for this unique concert. As an educator, she encourages her students to push their performance capabilities and embrace diverse musical styles.
Souther believes that Das' artistry inspires a new perspective on music. "Sandeep's work challenges us to view music from different angles," she says. "This collaboration is a great opportunity for our students to grow and explore."
Sandeep Das: A Global Musical Phenomenon
Hailed as a "creator of myths with Houdini-like skills" by The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia), Sandeep Das is a Grammy-winning tabla player and composer. He has collaborated with top musicians and ensembles worldwide, including Yo-Yo Ma, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony.
His musical journey is a testament to his versatility and innovation. Das brings a unique energy and passion to every performance, captivating audiences with his virtuosity.
Nature Takes Center Stage in the Winter Concert
The winter concert features pieces inspired by nature, such as Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome. Orchestra students specifically requested to perform this piece, aiming to immerse the audience in a sensory exploration. In the second act, an inventive virtual reality experience will enhance the concert, allowing a select number of audience members to experience it through virtual reality headsets or their smartphones.
This ambitious fusion of music and technology is made possible through a collaboration with Matthew Browning, Co-Director of Clemson University's Virtual Reality and Nature Lab. It showcases the university's commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
Giving Back to Nature
In response to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the Orchestra is partnering with the South Carolina State Forestry Commission to donate 1,000 trees to concert attendees. This gesture symbolizes hope and renewal, demonstrating the Orchestra's dedication to making a positive impact.
Tickets for the concert are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased at clemson.universitytickets.com, by phone at 864-656-7787, or at the Brooks Center Box Office. The Box Office is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday-Friday and 90 minutes before the performance.
