Christopher Brittain, a seasoned expert in food systems and sustainability, has recently joined the University of Minnesota Extension's Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP) as a program associate. His extensive background in creating market opportunities for local farmers and enhancing supply chains will significantly contribute to RSDP's mission. Brittain’s role involves fostering meaningful partnerships and implementing innovative solutions to address rural food system challenges in Minnesota. His passion for sustainable agriculture extends beyond his professional life, as he enjoys baking and experimenting with local ingredients in his kitchen.

From Tennessee Roots to Minnesota Innovation

Brittain's journey into sustainable food systems began early in his life. Growing up in Tennessee, he developed a keen interest in sustainability sciences during his college years. A pivotal moment came when he visited an aquaponics farm, which sparked his curiosity about circular agricultural models. This experience led him to pursue degrees in environmental studies and urban planning, culminating in a Master’s in food systems from the University of Vermont. Before joining RSDP, Brittain worked in Vermont, collaborating with various stakeholders to promote local food procurement in educational institutions.

In his previous role, Brittain facilitated partnerships between state governments, non-profits, farmers, chefs, and universities to increase the availability of locally grown food. These collaborations not only enhanced the quality of meals served but also created new sales channels for farmers. By connecting diverse groups within the food system, Brittain helped strengthen local economies and supported sustainable farming practices. His hands-on approach and ability to bridge different sectors made him an invaluable asset to the community.

Driving Change in Minnesota’s Food Landscape

Since joining RSDP in October 2024, Brittain has been actively involved in exploring and addressing the unique challenges faced by Minnesota’s rural food systems. He brings a wealth of experience in developing market opportunities and supply chains, which is crucial for RSDP’s mission to promote sustainability and support rural communities. Brittain’s work includes touring various facilities and supporting initiatives such as backhaul planning and meat-processing improvements.

Greg Schweser, director of Statewide Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at RSDP, highlights the significance of Brittain’s background. Schweser believes that Brittain’s expertise will enhance RSDP’s capacity to tackle rural food system issues and seize new opportunities. Brittain finds it both stimulating and inspiring to engage in statewide conversations about food systems and learn from farmers, rural business leaders, and local champions. His approach emphasizes collaboration and creativity, often leading to innovative solutions discovered through dialogue and shared experiences. Outside of work, Brittain continues to explore local ingredients like Kernza flour, integrating his passion for baking with his commitment to sustainable agriculture.
