In a significant development for Delaware high school football, Chip Knapp has been appointed as the new head coach of Cape Henlopen High School. This move comes after the departure of Mike Frederick, who led the team to its first state championship game in nearly four decades. Knapp, a seasoned coach with over three decades of experience, brings a wealth of knowledge and success from his previous roles, including a transformative stint at Dover High School.

Knapp's journey to Cape Henlopen is marked by an interesting twist of fate. After stepping away from coaching for the first time in 35 years, he found himself drawn back to the sport when he purchased a second home in Lewes, coincidentally near Cape Henlopen. His connection with the school deepened through conversations with Frederick, leading to this new chapter in his career. The former Wesley College coach is now set to take on the challenge of building upon the recent successes of the Vikings, aiming to guide them toward further achievements on the field.

Knapp’s background includes a long tenure at Wesley College, where he served as offensive coordinator under Mike Drass and later became head coach following Drass' passing in 2018. During his time there, Wesley enjoyed 13 consecutive NCAA playoff appearances. At Dover High School, Knapp quickly turned around the program, leading the Senators to their first state title game appearance in over three decades and earning Coach of the Year honors in 2022.

As Knapp prepares to introduce himself to the players and staff at Cape Henlopen, expectations are high for what he can bring to the table. His role will extend beyond the field, as he will also serve as a "float teacher" within the school community. With his extensive experience and proven track record, Knapp is poised to make a lasting impact on the Cape Henlopen football program, continuing the momentum built by his predecessor.

The appointment of Knapp signals a promising future for Cape Henlopen football. His history of revitalizing programs and fostering a winning culture suggests that the Vikings may be on the cusp of another era of success. As players and staff get acquainted with their new leader, the community eagerly anticipates the direction Knapp will take the team in the coming seasons.
