The Chicago Bears faced yet another setback on Sunday as they lost their fourth consecutive game, dropping their record to 4-6. However, amidst the defeat, there were some positive aspects that gave fans and the team reason to be optimistic.
Offense Finds Its Rhythm
Interim offensive coordinator Thomas Brown's game plan brought a much-needed balance to the Bears' offense. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams settled into a rhythm, leading two touchdown drives that consisted of 11-plus plays each. The team dominated time of possession by over 12 minutes, putting them in a position to win late. But a blocked field goal dashed their hopes, and they fell to the Packers by a narrow margin of 20-19.Williams himself expressed his encouragement, stating, "It started with (Brown) stringing things together and doing a good job with that and getting everybody into a rhythm and not necessarily thinking of what’s next? Or anything like that. We kind of had an idea of what’s next, and from there you go out there, you play, and you play efficient football, it gives you the best chance to win."Indeed, compared to their previous outing against New England where they gained just 2.4 yards per play and lost 19-3, the Bears were much more efficient in this game, averaging 5.8 yards per play. They also converted nine of 16 third downs, a significant improvement from the 1-of-14 mark they had in the Week 10 loss.Organization and Decision-Making
Thomas Brown's influence was not only seen in the offensive performance but also in the team's overall organization. Williams explained that there was no major overhaul during the few days when Brown took over as the offensive coordinator and play caller. Instead, it was the decisiveness and attention to details that made a difference."We didn’t reinvent the wheel for those three or four (practice) days that Thomas became the offensive coordinator and play caller," Williams said. "I think the decisiveness, I think all of that came from, one, our meetings, and how we’re going to do things. I think it came from being able to get play calls in faster and being able to get up there and not feel like you’re rushed or not feel like you need to hurry up and get the ball snapped and things like that."These small details, such as the routes, blocking, and the path of running backs, all contributed to the team's success last week.Looking Ahead to the Future
A 4-6 season is not a lost cause yet, despite the playoffs seeming like a distant goal. Williams benefited from playing in a productive offense and is back on track in his long-term development."We’ll see if the Bears can build upon their small victories achieved in the Week 11 loss," he said. "I think communication, I think the attitude and I think us just going out there and being on the details, for myself and for the whole team. I think those three things would be huge for us for this run that we’re going to go on."The Bears now have a chance to build on this momentum when they face the Minnesota Vikings (8-2) in Week 12. It will be interesting to see if they can continue to improve and make a push towards a more successful season.
