In the aftermath of a challenging defeat, the Chatham girls basketball team gathered their thoughts following a 34-19 loss to Cherry Hill West in the NJSIAA Group 3 championship. Despite the emotional weight of the game, senior guard McKenna Hogan emphasized the positive aspects of the season. With a legacy marked by memorable moments and high standards, this group of players has left an indelible mark on the program.

This contest marked another chapter in the Cougars' journey toward achieving state glory. Having reached six Group finals without success, the pressure was palpable for this year's squad. However, Cherry Hill West demonstrated resilience, securing their first sectional title earlier in the season. The Lions finished strong with a nine-game winning streak and captured their inaugural state trophy.

A standout performer for Cherry Hill West was sophomore Kirsten Gibson, who led all scorers with 16 points. Their defensive strategy focused on neutralizing Chatham’s perimeter shooting prowess. Under coach Dan Butler’s guidance, the Lions succeeded in pushing the Cougars away from the basket, limiting them to just two successful three-point attempts out of eleven tries.

The absence of key player Mia Semioli added further complexity to Chatham's challenge. Semioli sustained an injury during the semifinal match, leaving her sidelined. Senior teammates Arden Alvarez and Ella von Doussa managed five points each, while Kreuzer contributed modestly with four points, four rebounds, and three assists. This performance resulted in the Cougars’ lowest scoring output since a previous tournament encounter in 2014.

Despite these setbacks, head coach Joe Gaba praised his team for setting new benchmarks within the program. The seniors, many of whom have played together since childhood, boast an impressive overall record and achieved significant milestones this season. Though they fell short in their pursuit of a state title, their accomplishments remain noteworthy.

As the curtain closes on another competitive campaign, the Chatham Cougars leave behind a legacy defined by perseverance and excellence. Their ability to consistently compete at high levels speaks volumes about their dedication and skill, ensuring that future teams will strive to uphold the standard set by this remarkable group.
