The updated policy will scrutinize any payment that appears to be associated with an online purchase facilitated through social media channels. If a Zelle transfer is flagged as originating from such interactions, Chase may decline or block the transaction. In addition, the bank may request further information about the nature of the payment, including details about the recipient and the context of the transaction. This step aims to ensure that all transactions are legitimate and reduce the risk of fraud.
Chase's decision comes in response to alarming statistics showing that half of all fraud claims related to Zelle originate from social media. Other financial institutions have also noted this trend, with NatWest Bank reporting that social media marketplace scams are among the fastest-growing types of consumer fraud. Particularly concerning is the impact on younger users, with 60% of individuals aged 18-24 either experiencing or knowing someone who has fallen victim to online scams.
Moreover, the lack of a refund option for Zelle transactions adds another layer of complexity. These digital transfers are treated similarly to handing over cash, leaving consumers without recourse if the transaction goes awry.
