A Cup rookie season often passes in a haze for a driver. Carson Hocevar's rookie season, however, seemed to fly by even more quickly. Spire Motorsports team co-owner Jeff Dickerson shared a unique perspective on Hocevar's rookie season with the driver. "The best thing is, we did like three years of development" in just one season, Hocevar recounted. "We started the year with no expectations for the 77 (team), then they were shocked to see it perform well upfront. But by the end, they were used to it. That takes a long time in this series and sport. For us to have that progression, from no one expecting us to being shocked and then getting used to seeing us, is the greatest compliment I can receive."

The Early Season Struggles

The 21-year-old Michigan native didn't have a great start to the season. In the season-opening Daytona 500, he was involved in a crash on the fifth lap and ended up last in the 40-car field. In the first 14 races through the Coca-Cola 600, he had only one top-10 finish. It was a challenging start, but his season was about to change.During the Memorial Day weekend race, Hocevar began a remarkable streak. He scored five consecutive top-20 finishes and had top 20s in 10 of the next 11 races, including three top 10s. His summer stretch was eventful as well, with a $50,000 fine and a 25-point penalty from NASCAR for wrecking Harrison Burton under caution at Nashville in late June.

Season Highlights

Hocevar's season was filled with notable achievements. He finished with one top-five finish, a third-place result at Watkins Glen. He also had six top 10s, which earned him Cup Rookie of the Year honors. Despite the challenges, he finished 21st in the points, the highest a Spire Motorsports driver had achieved in the Cup standings.

Team Changes and Growth

Spire Motorsports made significant changes during the season. They essentially traded Corey LaJoie for Justin Haley during the playoffs and added former champion crew chief Rodney Childers and former Daytona 500 winner Michael McDowell, along with his crew chief, Travis Peterson. Hocevar is looking forward to McDowell's addition to enhance his superspeedway racing.

Future Plans

For the 2025 season, Hocevar plans to race more. In 2024, he focused solely on Cup races. It was the first time since 2018 that he didn't run in a Truck Series race. He is still finalizing his schedule but is expected to run select Truck races for Spire Motorsports and also participate in select dirt late model events.Recent Cup Rookie of the Year winners have included names like Ty Gibbs, Austin Cindric, Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, Daniel Hemric, William Byron, Erik Jones, Chase Elliott, Brett Moffitt, and Kyle Larson. Each of these rookies has left their mark on the sport, and Hocevar's story is no exception.
