After a five-year hiatus, the indie rock band Car Seat Headrest has returned with an ambitious project that pushes the boundaries of storytelling through music. The Scholars, their latest album, is set to release on May 2 via Matador Records. This work is described as a rock opera, weaving intricate narratives around various characters connected to the fictional Parnassus University. In addition to the album, the band has released an 11-minute multi-part song titled "Gethsemane," accompanied by a visually striking music video directed by Andrew Wonder.

The central theme of "Gethsemane" revolves around Rosa, a medical school student with an extraordinary ability. Rosa possesses the power to revive deceased patients by absorbing their pain, a skill she has kept hidden since childhood. Each night, instead of dreaming, she experiences the raw emotions and stories of those she encounters during the day. As her reality blurs, Rosa finds herself drawn into secret underground facilities beneath the university, where ancient entities orchestrate dark plans. This narrative not only showcases the band's storytelling prowess but also delves into themes of life, death, and transformation.

The Scholars will soon be brought to life on stage as Car Seat Headrest embarks on a U.S. tour this year. Despite the relatively sparse schedule, the nine shows promise to deliver powerful performances. The tour begins in Salt Lake City on May 16 and concludes in Oakland on November 1. Lead vocalist Will Toledo's health, affected by a severe reaction to COVID-19 years ago, plays a role in the spacing of these dates. Through their music and live performances, Car Seat Headrest continues to inspire and challenge audiences, reminding us of the transformative power of art and resilience in the face of adversity.
