Just after 9 a.m., a Subaru Forester driven by a 71-year-old woman crashed several feet into the restaurant. The force of the impact was so great that it caused extensive damage to the front of the building. Firefighters had to use specialized tools to free the pinned restaurant worker and get them to a waiting ambulance. The other crash victim, a restaurant patron, was also taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment and is expected to be okay.
The driver of the car was uninjured. After the crash, the Technical Rescue Team worked to shore up the building and ensure the safety of all utilities. The owners of the property were later allowed back into the building. Neighboring businesses in the Shop Ahoy Plaza that were not damaged will remain open.
The Chatham Police Department is currently investigating the cause of the crash. It is not yet clear if the driver will face charges. Chatham, located on Cape Cod about 85 miles from Boston, has been the scene of this unfortunate event.
