Educators Showcase Their Talents to Support Student Musicians

In a heartwarming display of dedication and artistry, a group of music teachers from the Cape Henlopen School District in Delaware came together to host a special recital. The event, held on Thursday, September 12th, aimed to raise funds for the district's music programs and showcase the impressive talents of the educators themselves.

Empowering Student Musicians Through Passionate Performances

Bringing Music to Life

The teachers have been preparing for this recital for weeks, each performing at least one piece, as well as collaborating on duets and group songs. Marian Sunnergren, the choir teacher at Cape Henlopen High School, expressed the excitement and anticipation the teachers felt leading up to the event, noting that it was something they had wanted to do for a long time. The recital provided a unique opportunity for the educators to not only share their musical abilities with the community but also to inspire and support their student musicians.

A Diverse Repertoire Captivates the Audience

The recital featured a wide range of musical styles and genres, from classical pieces to Broadway show tunes and jazz. Nick Greeson, the band teacher at the new Frederick D. Thomas Middle School, showcased his virtuosic skills on the alto saxophone, performing "Carnival of Venice" while being accompanied by pianist David Libby. Cape Henlopen High School assistant band director Elly Rolfes captivated the audience with her marimba performance of "Strive to Be Happy."

Relatable and Expressive Performances

Choir teacher Marian Sunnergren delivered a poignant and expressive rendition of "The Girl in 14G," a song that explores the relatable topic of moving into a new apartment and dealing with disruptive neighbors. In this case, the antagonists in Sunnergren's performance were practicing opera and jazz, adding a humorous twist to the piece.

Bringing Broadway to the Recital

Juleeann Schlitter, another choir and general music teacher, brought the energy and excitement of Broadway to the recital, performing selections from the musical "Waitress," including "What Baking Can Do" and "She Used to Be Mine." Her dynamic and engaging performances captivated the audience and showcased the versatility of the district's music educators.

A Collaborative Closing Number

The recital concluded with a rousing performance of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," featuring a larger group of teachers, including elementary band teacher Mirella Gable and Thomas Middle School band teacher Nick Greeson. This collaborative piece highlighted the camaraderie and unity among the music educators, as they came together to deliver a lively and entertaining finale.Throughout the recital, pianist David Libby provided accompaniment for the majority of the performers, seamlessly supporting their musical endeavors and contributing to the overall success of the event.

Celebrating the Talents of Dedicated Educators

The Cape Henlopen School District teachers were all smiles after their inaugural faculty recital, held in the Cape Henlopen High School auditorium. The event not only showcased their impressive musical abilities but also demonstrated their unwavering commitment to supporting and inspiring their students. By taking the stage and sharing their talents, these educators are setting a powerful example for the young musicians they teach, inspiring them to pursue their own musical passions and dreams.
