Unparalleled Excellence: The New Standard for Cal Poly Tennis
In a testament to their relentless pursuit of excellence, the Cal Poly Women’s Tennis team has solidified its place among the elite programs in collegiate sports. With six athletes recognized by the Big West Conference, this year’s success not only rewrites history but also sets a benchmark for future generations.
Senior Leadership Elevates Team Performance
Peyton Dunkle, a cornerstone of the Mustangs' lineup, has been pivotal in shaping the team’s identity over her tenure. Her induction into the First-Team All-Big West singles category reflects her outstanding performance throughout the season. Competing predominantly at the No. 2 line, Dunkle amassed a remarkable 15-3 record, breaking the Mustangs’ Division I record for career dual singles victories with an impressive tally of 52 wins.
Beyond her individual achievements, Dunkle’s legacy extends to doubles play, where she partnered with Amy Leather to secure Second-Team All-Big West recognition. This duo exemplifies the synergy that defines Cal Poly’s approach to competition. Dunkle’s inclusion in four All-Big West doubles teams and three singles teams places her alongside Samantha Waller as one of the most decorated players in program history.
Rising Stars Transform Team Dynamics
Kennedy Buntrock emerged as a transformative force within the Mustangs’ ranks, transitioning from a mid-lineup player to the top singles competitor. Last season, Buntrock primarily occupied lines No. 4 and 5, yet this year she earned Second-Team All-Big West honors while consistently facing opponents’ premier players. Despite challenging matchups, she maintained a commendable 9-11 record at the No. 1 singles spot and a resilient 4-5 record in conference play.
This growth was mirrored in doubles, where Buntrock teamed up with Romane Mosse to create a formidable pairing. Their partnership yielded a stellar 13-5 record, earning them First-Team All-Big West distinction. This performance ranks among the program’s all-time best single-season achievements, underscoring the impact of strategic collaboration and mutual support.
Fresh Faces Forge New Paths
Emerging talents Natalie Lynch and Jessica MacCallum have made significant contributions to the Mustangs’ success, securing Honorable Mention status for their efforts. Lynch, returning after a hiatus, quickly established chemistry with first-year player MacCallum. Their seamless partnership resulted in a flawless 9-2 record at the No. 3 doubles line, including undefeated performances during the Big West Championships.
Jessica MacCallum’s debut campaign has been nothing short of extraordinary. Amassing a 19-3 singles record, she tied for the third-most single-season victories in the program’s Division I era. Her consistent performance positioned her as a contender for Big West Freshman of the Year, highlighting the influx of fresh talent propelling the team forward.
International Influence Bolsters Team Strength
Romane Mosse, hailing from Viroflay, France, has become a key figure in the Mustangs’ lineup. Her Honorable Mention recognition in singles is well-deserved, given her 15-8 overall record and a dominant 7-2 mark against Big West opponents. Over her two-year tenure at Cal Poly, Mosse boasts an impressive 32-13 singles record and a 24-13 doubles record, showcasing her versatility and adaptability on the court.
Mosse’s contributions extend beyond statistics; her international perspective enriches the team dynamic, fostering a global mindset that enhances both tactical acumen and cultural understanding. This blend of diverse experiences strengthens the Mustangs’ competitive edge and prepares them for challenges on a broader stage.
