Born and bred in Florida, Cagliostro initially raced under the training of Cherie DeVaux for a partnership that included bloodstock agent David Ingordo, West Point Thoroughbreds, Nice Guys Stable, Talla Racing, and James Spry. In his early career, Cagliostro showed promise, finishing third in the GIII Indiana Derby and second in the GIII Smarty Jones Stakes. Despite an unplaced finish in the GIII Oklahoma Derby, he continued to build momentum.

After being acquired by Wathnan Racing, Cagliostro's performances became even more noteworthy.
