ByteDance, the parent company of the wildly popular social media platform TikTok, has announced the closure of its music streaming service, TikTok Music, effective November 28, 2024. In a statement, ByteDance's Global Head of Music Business Development, Ole Obermann, explained the company's decision, saying, "We will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November in order to focus on our goal of furthering TikTok's role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters, and the industry." This shift in strategy suggests that ByteDance sees greater potential in leveraging TikTok's influence to drive music discovery and engagement on established streaming platforms, rather than competing with them directly.

Users who have created playlists on TikTok Music will need to transfer them to other streaming services by October 28, 2024, and any refund requests must be submitted by November 28, 2024. The company has assured users that its "Add to Music App" feature, which allows users to add tracks directly to playlists on Apple Music, Amazon Music, or Spotify, will continue to be available, enabling a seamless transition for TikTok Music users.
