The new PvP extraction shooter, Marathon, developed by Bungie, has recently launched following a challenging pre-release phase that included a delay due to unfavorable feedback from an alpha test. A more significant setback for Marathon involved a plagiarism controversy that impacted Bungie earlier this year. This issue has now been resolved, with the artist whose work was appropriated by Bungie receiving proper acknowledgement within the game.
In May 2025, artist Fern "4nt1r34l" Hook accused Bungie of illicitly utilizing her artwork as in-game assets for Marathon. Subsequent to an inquiry, Bungie conceded their error, confirming that "a former Bungie artist incorporated these into a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game." At that time, Bungie indicated they had "reached out to 4nt1r34l to discuss this issue and are committed to do right by the artist." Later that year, Hook declared on X that the "Marathon art issue has been resolved with Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment to my satisfaction." The specific terms of this resolution were not disclosed then.
With Marathon now available, players have noted Hook's inclusion in the game's credits. She is listed as a visual design consultant in the freelance section. Hook herself has not commented on this game credit on her social media platforms since her December post about the resolution. Marathon is currently accessible on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Being a multiplayer title, comprehensive critical reviews are still emerging, yet online reactions to the full game and the prior week's server test have been plentiful. It appears to be a polarizing game, with early assessments describing it as "one of the most divisive games in a while" and "unlike any game we've seen before, and should be treated as such."
The resolution of this intellectual property dispute underscores the importance of respecting artistic integrity and acknowledging creators' contributions, fostering a more ethical environment within the gaming industry and beyond.
