Hometown Hero Triumphs on Challenging Bakersfield Track

Kofoid's Relentless Pursuit of the Lead

Kofoid, known for his prowess on the bullring circuits of California, wasted no time asserting his dominance at Bakersfield. After charging from sixth to third in the Toyota Racing Dash, the young driver lined up on the inside of the second row for the 35-lap feature event. Kofoid quickly moved into second place and ignited a race-long duel with pole-sitter Scelzi, trading the lead multiple times through a series of thrilling slide jobs and crossover moves. The two Californians navigated the narrow, slick track with precision, slicing through heavy traffic and fighting for every inch of space as the laps wound down. Kofoid's persistence paid off on Lap 28 when he executed a decisive slide job that stuck, allowing him to take the lead from Scelzi and pull away to a well-deserved victory on his home turf.

Scelzi's Valiant Effort Falls Short

Scelzi, the Fresno, California native, led the field to the green flag and put up a valiant fight against Kofoid's relentless advances. The KCP Racing driver countered Kofoid's slide job attempts with impressive crossover moves, but ultimately, the Roth Motorsports No. 83 machine proved to be the faster car on the night.Despite leading the first 27 laps, Scelzi acknowledged that Kofoid and his team had the upper hand. "I was hanging on from pretty early in the race," Scelzi said. "We made changes every session because the track was changing so much. I felt like we stayed on top of it, just missed it. We got beat by a better driver and a better car tonight."

Macedo Rounds Out the Podium

The California dominance continued as Carson Macedo brought the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 home in third place. Macedo, who has been on a hot streak of late, was poised to challenge for the lead had it not been for an ill-timed caution flag that took away his potential shot at the top spot."It would've been nice for it to stick just because I think I would've at least came out of there in second," Macedo explained. "It seemed like Gio was going to cross me over there, but you never know. At least I would've had somewhat of a shot at it."

Kofoid's Impressive Streak Continues

The victory marked Kofoid's fourth win of the 2024 season, tying him with Donny Schatz for the fourth-most wins on the World of Outlaws tour. The 22-year-old has been on a remarkable run, finishing no worse than fourth in the last eight outings and winning three of the last four races with the series.Kofoid's comfort and confidence on the Bakersfield Speedway were evident throughout the race. "This is one of my favorite tracks in a Midget. I'd never ran a Sprint Car here. Now, it's definitely up there," he said. "I just can't thank Dylan (Buswell) enough. I'm super grateful to have someone like Dylan in my corner."The Roth Motorsports crew's recent hot streak has been a testament to the strong partnership between Kofoid and crew chief Dylan Buswell. "In Sprint Car racing, you're competing with guys that have been on the tour for a while. I've never really had a guy this long until now. I feel like Dylan and I just work well when it's going good. It just feels easy. Not that it is because these are the best guys in the world."With the Bakersfield victory, Kofoid and the Roth Motorsports team have solidified their position as a force to be reckoned with in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. As the season progresses, the young Californian will undoubtedly continue to make his mark on the sport, captivating fans with his thrilling performances and unwavering determination.
