Boise Bicycle Project Gives Dream Bikes to Valley Kids

In the back of the Boise Bicycle Project, a dozen staff and volunteers are hard at work. They are meticulously greasing bike pedals, repairing fenders, and fixing chains. Brian Kendall, a volunteer for the bike giveaway, is putting a wheel back on a pink, princess themed bike. He has previous experience working on bikes but only learned about this remarkable project just two days ago. "I was seeking an opportunity to get back into some form of community service while also getting to tinker with bikes. Until I arrived here, I had no idea how extensive this operation is, both in the repair area and the warehouse. It's truly intense, and what they do is really cool," Kendall shared.

Boise State Public Radio's Impact on the Boise Bicycle Project

Starting in August, children from across the valley submitted drawings of their dream bikes. Devin McComas, the executive director of the Boise Bicycle Project and a member for four years, emphasized that this event is at the core of their mission. "We ensure that young people for whom a bike can make a life-changing difference are paired with a bike," McComas said. These kids were referred to the event by teachers, counselors, or social workers. This year, the BBP received a record-breaking 630 dream bike requests.

For us, it's not about the record number. It's about each of those kids having their own unique story and how a bicycle will transform their lives. On Saturday, December 14th, the bikes will be presented to the kids who dreamed them. The Boise Bicycle Project is still in need of donations of kids' bikes to fulfill all 630 requests. You can view all the drawings and "adopt-a-bike" on the BBP's website. The Boise Bicycle Project is not just about fixing bikes; it's about creating opportunities and making a positive impact on the lives of children. With the dedicated efforts of the staff and volunteers, along with the support of the community, they are able to bring joy and transformation through the simple gift of a bicycle. Each bike repaired and presented is a step towards a better future for these young ones. The work they do is truly inspiring and shows the power of community involvement in making a difference.
