But now, a new discovery has piqued my interest – a small, unassuming restaurant in Fort Worth that promises to transport me to the heart of Rome, one bite at a time.

The story of Bocca Osteria Romana begins with a chance encounter in Dallas, where a young woman working at an antique shop shared her family's plans to open an Italian restaurant in Fort Worth. Intrigued, I followed up and learned about the trio of Texas-born siblings – Alessandro and Alfonso Salvatore, and their cousin Eduardo Mariel – who were determined to bring the flavors of their travels in Italy and Puerto Rico to their home state.The brothers had already established a successful restaurant in San Juan, and now they set their sights on Fort Worth, determined to create an experience that would echo the intimate, family-run eateries they had come to love during their time in Italy. With a focus on Rome-inspired cuisine and a commitment to authenticity, they took over the former Rancho Loma Vineyards space and transformed it into Bocca Osteria Romana.

A Refreshing Departure from the Mainstream

In a city where many new Italian restaurants are either ventures from established chefs or part of larger hotel complexes, Bocca stands out as a refreshing anomaly. There's no star chef, no flashy decor, and no see-and-be-seen vibe. Instead, it's a small, neighborhood eatery where the focus is squarely on the food, just as it would be in a cozy trattoria in the heart of Rome.The menu at Bocca is an abbreviated version of its Puerto Rican counterpart, but it's a carefully curated selection that showcases the family's passion for authentic Italian cuisine. Housemade pastas, such as cacio e pepe and lasagna al forno, share the spotlight with imported delicacies like pappardelle and a rotating risotto. And the few dishes that aren't homemade are sourced directly from Italy, ensuring a level of quality and authenticity that's hard to find in many mainstream Italian restaurants.

A Hidden Gem Waiting to Be Discovered

Tucked away down an alley adjacent to The 4 Eleven building on South Main, Bocca has a sort of in-the-know, speakeasy vibe that sets it apart from the more prominent Italian establishments in the area. The owners are intentionally letting the restaurant build word-of-mouth, hoping to establish it as a hidden gem that offers a refreshing change of pace from the city's more flashy dining options.During my visit, I was immediately struck by the restaurant's modest decor and low-key vibe, which perfectly complement the focus on the food. The pomodoro basilico e burrata, a simple yet beautifully presented dish of spaghetti in tomato sauce topped with burrata cheese and fresh basil, was a revelation, as were the freshly made gnocchi, which came drenched in an addictive sauce of blue cheese and pear.But it was the restaurant's focaccia bread, served straight from the oven, and the La Stracciatella salad, featuring peaches, heirloom tomatoes, and stracciatella cheese, that truly captured my heart. The leftovers from the salad were used to dress the focaccia, a wise decision that showcased the kitchen's attention to detail and the owners' commitment to making the most of every ingredient.
