The BMW Motorrad brand is making significant strides in its Heritage lineup with the introduction of the remarkable BMW R 12 S. This modern reinterpretation of the legendary R 90 S, which first captured the world's attention in 1973, is a true testament to the brand's commitment to blending vintage aesthetics with cutting-edge technology.

Honoring a Motorsport Icon

The original R 90 S, crafted under the visionary Chief Designer Hans A. Muth, was a game-changer in its era. Possessing a powerful 67-horsepower engine and capable of reaching a top speed of 124 mph, it was equipped with the first-ever aerodynamic handlebar fairing on a production motorcycle. This unique feature quickly made the R 90 S a symbol of BMW's sporting aspirations. Its distinct design and engineering were further enhanced by remarkable racing success. It achieved a class victory at the 1976 Isle of Man Production TT and a historic win by Steve McLaughlin at the Daytona 200 in the same year. Reg Pridmore added to its legacy by securing the first-ever AMA Superbike Championship title, solidifying the R 90 S as one of the most coveted BMW motorcycles.

Design and Aesthetics

The new BMW R 12 S channels the essence of its predecessor while integrating modern technology. Built upon the platform of the R 12 nineT, it reimagines the legendary motorcycle with design elements that pay homage to the R 90 S. Its Lava Orange Metallic paint finish evokes the iconic Daytona Orange of 1975. Features such as a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with a tinted windshield, red double coach lines, and brushed aluminum accents give it a retro aesthetic with a contemporary twist. Alexander Buckan, Head of BMW Motorrad Design, emphasized, "The defining design elements of our R 12 S include the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing, the seat with contrast stitching, and the Lava Orange Metallic paint finish. These details, combined with modern technology, create a perfect homage to the R 90 S."

Power and Performance

Under the hood, the R 12 S is equipped with a 1,170 cc Boxer Engine. This air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox, providing smooth and powerful performance. The advanced suspension and brakes system includes the BMW Motorrad Paralever, an upside-down fork with adjustable settings, and twin-disc front brakes with radial calipers, ensuring excellent handling and stopping power. Whether on the open road or the track, the R 12 S delivers a thrilling riding experience.

Features and Customization

This BMW R 12 S comes with a host of features that enhance both the riding experience and customization options. It features advanced electronics such as Adaptive cornering light (Headlight Pro), Hill Start Control, Cruise Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and Ride Modes. Connectivity is also taken care of with USB ports, Keyless Ride, and an optional Connected Ride Control with a digital micro-TFT display. The standard equipment includes heated grips, adjustable handbrake and clutch levers, and LED lighting. The R 12 S offers two special packages to meet different customer preferences. The R 12 S Daytona Package includes Lava Orange Metallic Paint, a cockpit fairing, a short rear tail with integrated LED lighting, a black license plate frame attached to the swing arm, Option 719 Classic II Wheels, Hill Start Assist, Headlight Pro, Shift Assistant Pro, a single seat and rear hump cover, and heated grips. The Billet Pack Shadow includes milled Shadow ignition coil covers, oil filler plug, Avus Black Metallic Matte cylinder head covers. The Billet Pack Shadow II features milled shadow foot shift and brake levers, rider and passenger footrest systems, hand brake and clutch levers, brake reservoir cover, and bar end mirrors.The market launch of the BMW R 12 S is expected in Q1 2025, with an MSRP of $21,590 plus Destination.
