Black Futures Farm is the embodiment of a profound movement towards food sovereignty, a principle that acknowledges the inherent link between social and environmental justice. Emerging from the ashes of a history marred by oppression, displacement, and discriminatory housing practices, this farm represents a reclamation of land and a restoration of the deep-rooted connection between the Black community and the earth.The farm's origins can be traced back to 2019, when a group of passionate Black food growers, including Mirabai Collins and Malcolm Hoover, came together to establish Black Futures Farm. Building upon the foundation of a smaller project called We Grow PDX, the team officially broke ground on their own farm site on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2020, with the support of over 150 dedicated volunteers.

Cultivating Community Connections

Black Futures Farm is more than just a place to grow food – it's a hub for community building, knowledge sharing, and cultural celebration. As a part of the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition (BFSC), the farm has been the recipient of a Metro Community Placemaking grant, which has enabled them to create a safer and more welcoming gathering space for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.The grant has also supported programming and events at the farm, including the appointment of a part-time outreach and event coordinator. This investment in community engagement has been crucial, as Mirabai Collins, the farm's director and co-founder, emphasizes the importance of self-determination in decision-making and the creation of spaces that foster belonging and support.
