In Beacon Falls, Connecticut, the holiday season takes on a whole new meaning as local high school students come together to make a significant difference. As William Delucia, a high school senior, said, "It's such a cool feeling for the community to come together and give back with the blood drive." Delucia played a crucial role in planning the blood drive at Woodland Regional High School as part of his senior project.
"High Schoolers Unite to Save Lives with Blood Drives"
Planning and Goal Surpassing
Students quickly exceeded their initial goal, with more than 30 people showing up to support the cause. From friends and classmates to strangers with a heart for helping, the turnout was truly remarkable. As Megan Serke from the American Red Cross noted, "All high school blood drives touch my heart, especially when students take the initiative and learn leadership skills."This act of coming together showcases the power of community and the willingness of young people to make a positive impact. It's not just about donating blood; it's about creating a sense of unity and purpose during the holiday season.Personal Stories and the Need for Blood
William Delucia's personal experiences with family illness made him acutely aware of the critical need for blood. His grandfather was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer and passed away, and about a year later, his mother was also diagnosed with cancer. "She was this close to needing a blood transfusion, which comes from these types of drives," he explained. These stories highlight the real-life impact that blood donations can have. Just one donation can save up to three lives, as the American Red Cross emphasizes. It serves as a reminder of the importance of giving back and supporting those in need. The Legacy of Giving
William is carrying on a wonderful family legacy in honor of his grandfather. "He was the model guy. If there was someone I want to be, it's him," William said. "So the loss of him is really tough. But I'm glad he was able to live as long as he was. I can hopefully be just like him."This sense of legacy and purpose drives the students to continue their efforts in organizing blood drives. It shows that even in the face of hardship, they find the strength to make a difference and honor those they hold dear. The blood drive at Woodland Regional High School is a shining example of how high schoolers can make a meaningful contribution during the holiday season. It's a story of unity, compassion, and the power of giving that will continue to inspire others.
