Back in August 2024, LocalThunk, the creator of the acclaimed roguelike card game Balatro, had made a public commitment regarding a forthcoming update scheduled for 2025. This announcement, however, was later described by the developer as a misstep, as the extensive 1.1 patch has not yet materialized, and its release timeline has now been adjusted.
LocalThunk openly identifies as a developer who, at heart, enjoys the process of creation and experimentation. The unexpected and significant success of Balatro, however, brought with it the intense demands often associated with commercial game development. This transition from a personal project to a professional endeavor led to considerable stress and exhaustion for the creator.
Following Balatro's initial release in February 2024, LocalThunk immediately immersed himself in developing a major balance adjustment, version 1.0.1, and subsequently focused on porting the game to mobile platforms. By late 2024, with the mobile version launched, the relentless pace of work had taken a significant toll, resulting in profound burnout.
After a much-needed break from all Balatro-related work, LocalThunk gradually resumed development in early 2025. This return marked a conscious decision to revert to his original, more leisurely development style, dedicating only a few hours daily to the project, a stark contrast to the grueling 12-hour shifts he previously endured. The 1.1 update, while still a certainty, will now adhere to this revised, more measured pace.
LocalThunk has confirmed that the 1.1 update will not be released this year, explaining that his current, slower working method is preferable. The new philosophy for the update's release is unequivocally "it's done when it's done." Players can expect this comprehensive update to be freely available across all supported platforms once it's complete, though some initial tweaks might be necessary, similar to the 1.0 release.
While acknowledging the delay and offering apologies, the Balatro developer extended reassurance to the player base. He emphasized that his deep personal connection to the game would never allow him to abandon its development. LocalThunk expressed genuine excitement about the prospect of re-experiencing and achieving 100% completion in the game with the forthcoming 1.1 update, affirming its eventual arrival with absolute certainty.
