Makenna Oudekerk, a freshman at Albert Lea High School, recently had the opportunity of a lifetime – the chance to attend a prestigious USA Gold basketball camp led by legendary 10-time Olympic gold medal coach, Don Showalter. This remarkable experience not only challenged Makenna's skills but also ignited her passion for the sport, setting her on a path towards her dreams of collegiate basketball.

Discovering a Passion for the Game

Makenna's love for basketball began at a young age, with her first experiences in the sport coming through basketball camps around the age of 5 and playing at the Albert Lea Family YMCA. As she grew older, her dedication to the game only intensified, and she joined a traveling team in the third grade. While Makenna is also involved in soccer and track, basketball has always been her true passion.

Applying for the Prestigious Camp

Makenna's opportunity to attend the USA Gold basketball camp came about when her mother discovered the program online. The application process was rigorous, requiring Makenna to submit a variety of materials, including highlight videos, statistics, her report card, a letter of recommendation, and an essay. Despite the competitive nature of the camp, Makenna applied, not fully expecting to be selected.

Acceptance and Anticipation

To Makenna's surprise and delight, she was accepted into the prestigious camp. Her mother, Tammy, described the news as a shock, as Makenna had not anticipated being chosen for such an elite program. With a mix of excitement and nerves, Makenna prepared to embark on this remarkable journey.

Immersing in the Camp Experience

The USA Gold basketball camp brought together 86 talented young athletes from across the United States, ranging from seventh to tenth grade. Makenna's age group consisted of approximately 42 girls, all of whom shared her passion for the sport. Despite her initial nervousness, Makenna quickly connected with the other participants and coaches, marveling at their exceptional skills and the opportunity to learn from them.

Intensive Training and Personalized Feedback

During the camp, Makenna and her fellow athletes engaged in a rigorous schedule of activities designed to enhance their skills, performance, and overall attitude on the court. They worked closely with coaches, participated in drills, competed in games, and even had classroom sessions. The highlight of the experience was the personalized feedback provided by Coach Showalter himself, which Tammy described as a "big deal" for the young athletes.

Makenna's mother, Tammy, noted that the camp experience "pushed her harder" and that Makenna "just tries so hard at everything she does."With the option to attend the camp again in the upcoming year, Makenna is determined to continue her journey of personal growth and athletic development. Her sights are set on making the varsity team and pursuing her ultimate goal of playing basketball at the collegiate level.
