Bringing Aviation and Automotive Enthusiasts Together
The Madisonville Municipal Airport was the epicenter of the festivities, as pilots from various regions flew in to showcase their aviation skills and marvel at the impressive collection of vintage and modern automobiles on display. The event was designed to not only celebrate the city's vibrant aviation community but also to introduce the public to the beauty and capabilities of the local airport."This is our first annual Fly-In and Car Show, and what that means is different pilots from different areas are flying in, and we've got cars on display here," explained Brianna Williams, the Director of Marketing and Tourism for the City of Madisonville. "We just really wanted to show the public that we have a beautiful airport here, and bring people out to have fun."Captivating Performances and Engaging Experiences
The day was filled with a palpable sense of excitement as the crowd gathered to witness the planes land and take off, their engines roaring to life. Pilots who flew in were treated to a complimentary dinner, a gesture that not only expressed gratitude for their participation but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among the aviation enthusiasts. One of the standout performers was Devanie Sanchez, a flight instructor, flight attendant, and self-proclaimed aviation enthusiast. Sanchez's passion for aviation was ignited at the age of 18 when she realized her dream of becoming a pilot. After completing her college education, she worked tirelessly to carve out a place for herself in the aviation industry, starting as a flight attendant and eventually earning her civilian pilot's license."When I learned that I can be a civilian pilot, I was all in," Sanchez shared with KBTX. "I've just kind of dove head in first and picked up everything that I can learn from everyone."As a civilian pilot, Sanchez is a flight instrument instructor and a multi-engine instructor with Delta Whiskey Hotel Aero Club. Her experience as a flight attendant has also proven invaluable, as it has allowed her to expand her network and connect with more people in the aviation community."Whenever I'm working, I'm working with different people all the time... When they find out that I'm on my flight journey, then they connect me with other people or they send me students to start flying with," Sanchez explained. "That's been a huge help, as well, being a flight attendant."Inspiring the Next Generation of Aviators
Sanchez's journey has inspired her to give back to the aviation community and the world at large. She has founded a business called Pilot Juliet, with the goal of creating a scholarship fund for first-generation female pilots. Her passion for mentoring and supporting the next generation of aviators is palpable."I want to be able to help... I want someone else to feel like they have a chance to do something more," Sanchez said. "This is just... my way of giving back, not just to the aviation community, but to the world."Events like the Fly-In and Car Show provide Sanchez with the perfect platform to connect with other aviation enthusiasts and reach out to the younger generation. She relishes the opportunity to share her experiences and inspire others to pursue their dreams in the world of aviation.Fostering Community Engagement and Appreciation
The Fly-In and Car Show was not just a showcase of aviation and automotive prowess; it was a celebration of community engagement and appreciation. Families and children flocked to the event, captivated by the sight of the planes and the gleaming cars on display."The most exciting [part] is just seeing it all come about, putting on an event like this, you just never know," said Williams. "Just to see the turn out, the families out here and the kids interested in the planes... and just enjoying our airport."The Lazy Eight Flight School, which uses the municipal airport grounds to train its students, played a vital role in the event's success. The school offers a range of pilot training programs, including private pilot lessons, instrument rating training, commercial pilot lessons, and tailwheel flying endorsement training. As the sun set on the inaugural Fly-In and Car Show, the city of Madisonville celebrated the success of an event that had brought together aviation and automotive enthusiasts, fostered community engagement, and inspired the next generation of pilots and car enthusiasts. The stage is set for an even more remarkable event in the years to come, as Madisonville continues to showcase its vibrant aviation community and its commitment to celebrating the passions that drive its residents.
