Gomez, along with another car lot employee, immediately gave chase in separate vehicles, determined to stop the illegal dumping.

According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, the driver of the Dodge truck pulled out a gun during the pursuit, but this did not deter Gomez and his colleague from continuing to follow the suspect. Salazar stated that Gomez and the Dodge truck driver may have exchanged gunfire, although it remains unclear if any bullet struck Gomez.
