The Audi RS3, already renowned for its impressive speed and performance, has been taken to new heights by VW Group's tuning experts at Abt Sportsline. Despite the RS3 being a powerhouse with its five-cylinder engine, Abt has introduced the RS3-R, an enhanced version that boasts even more horsepower and torque. Through advanced technology and modifications, this new model promises to deliver exhilarating performance figures surpassing those of some supercars.
Abt Sportsline has managed to extract an extraordinary 503bhp from the RS3's 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, significantly increasing its power output compared to the standard model. This achievement is made possible through the installation of Abt's Power R engine control system alongside a new intercooler. Consequently, the RS3-R accelerates from 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds, which is notably faster than the original RS3's time of 3.8 seconds. Interestingly, this acceleration matches that of the Ferrari Roma, yet remains within the confines of what is essentially a Golf-based platform.
Beyond engine enhancements, the RS3-R receives subtle upgrades to its chassis. Lightweight forged 20-inch alloy wheels, along with Abt's own springs and anti-roll bars, contribute to improved handling. Additionally, the inclusion of a stainless steel exhaust system not only enhances sound quality but also celebrates the legacy of the five-cylinder engine, which is becoming increasingly rare in the automotive market.
Aesthetically, the RS3-R dons carbon fiber components such as a front splitter and rear spoiler, differing between hatchback and saloon versions. Carbon mirror caps and racing-style canards on the front bumper add to the car's aggressive appearance, providing both form and function. Inside, while changes are less dramatic, Abt branding dominates the interior to remind drivers of the source behind their thrilling driving experience.
Production of the RS3-R is limited to 125 examples each for the Sportback and Saloon models. In Germany, pricing starts at €38,900 for the Saloon and €39,900 for the Sportback, approximately £33,000 and £34,000 respectively. With these enhancements, the RS3-R stands out as a remarkable blend of performance and exclusivity, appealing to enthusiasts seeking something beyond the ordinary.
With its potent engine and refined aesthetics, the Abt RS3-R represents a significant leap forward for the RS3. Not only does it offer enhanced performance capabilities, but it also embodies the spirit of innovation and craftsmanship that defines high-performance vehicles today. As one of only 125 available units, owning an RS3-R signifies membership in an exclusive club of automotive aficionados who appreciate the finer details of engineering excellence.
