Early Race Struggles and Battles

The race began with a great start from Bortoleto, who got ahead of pole-sitter Aron off the line. Debutant Dino Beganovic also had a fierce battle in Turn 1 for third with Victor Martins. Kush Maini faced difficulties early on, dropping from P7 to P11 in just a few corners. He first lost out to fellow Hard tyre runner Oliver Bearman and was then followed through by teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, as well as Oliver Goethe and Isack Hadjar. At the start of Lap 6, the top two were separated by 1.2s, with a significant gap to Beganovic in third, who was struggling on his Medium tyres. Later, Jak Crawford, a teammate of Beganovic at DAMS Lucas Oil, was the first of the Option tyre runners to pit. This set off a chain reaction as several other drivers followed suit, including Aron, Martins, Richard Verschoor, and Antonelli.

The Impact of Virtual Safety Car and Full Safety Car

A brilliant start from Bortoleto took him to the lead heading to Turn 1. However, a Virtual Safety Car was soon deployed due to Antonelli's incident in the gravel in the first sector. The Italian driver complained of a broken steering wheel after colliding with Verschoor in the pit lane. The Dutchman was later handed a 10-second time penalty for an unsafe release. The timing of the VSC was crucial as Bortoleto had committed to pit just as it was deployed. He decided to cross the pit entry line back onto the circuit, leaving his car stranded. A full Safety Car was then deployed, allowing Bortoleto to pit and retain the net race lead on Lap 9. But he was soon given a five-second time penalty for not following the Race Director's instructions. With his car stranded, Hadjar was the big beneficiary of waiting to pit under the Safety Car. He moved up to P9 and was now right behind his title rivals. The race resumed on Lap 13, with Duerksen challenging Bearman for the lead. But the Safety Car was back out after Crawford and Rafael Villagómez collided at Turn 6. Crawford was forced to retire with a suspension issue, while Villagómez was stationary on track.

The Final Lap Drama

The drama resumed on Lap 17, with Bearman wide at the final corner, giving Duerksen the lead. But Duerksen's overtake against the rules allowed Maini and Browning to move up. Behind them, Bortoleto, Aron, and Hadjar were fighting their way through the field, getting past Esterson and Martí to move up to fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively. With less than three minutes to go, Bearman and Duerksen pitted, giving Bortoleto the lead on track. With four seconds separating him and his closest title rival Hadjar in third, the final lap was a nail-biting affair. Despite pushing on, Aron was able to hold off Bortoleto and claim the victory, with Hadjar second and Goethe fourth. In the end, the top three drivers celebrated on the podium, marking a significant moment in Formula 2 history. Paul Aron's victory was a testament to his skill and perseverance, while Gabriel Bortoleto's performance was also remarkable. Isack Hadjar's close battle for the championship added to the excitement of the race.
