The 24th annual local College Showcase girls basketball competition is set to take place on Sunday, September 29th, at Fairfax High School from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event, open to high-school age players from Northern Virginia and surrounding jurisdictions, has become a renowned platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their skills and connect with college coaches.

A Tradition of Excellence

The College Showcase has a rich history, having been founded in 1998 by Oakton High School's girls head basketball coach, Fred Priester. With the exception of the disruptions caused by 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic, this annual event has consistently provided a stage for young athletes to showcase their talents and gain exposure to college programs. Over the years, the showcase has evolved to cater to the changing landscape of college basketball, adapting its focus to better serve the needs of Division III and NAIA institutions.

Fostering Competitive Growth

The College Showcase offers a unique opportunity for high school players to engage in competitive play during the pre-season. Featuring a series of refereed games with running clocks and individual drill stations, the event allows participants to hone their skills and showcase their abilities in a dynamic, high-intensity environment. The bright jerseys, reminiscent of Skittle candies, add a vibrant touch to the proceedings, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.

The College Showcase has long been recognized as one of the top showcases on the East Coast, attracting the attention of 30 to 40 Division I college programs in its early years. As the NCAA rules and the broader basketball landscape have evolved, the event has shifted its focus to providing a platform for Division III and NAIA schools to connect with talented high school players. Over the past 12 years, the event has drawn an average of 80 athletes and 10-20 college coaches, creating a dynamic environment for meaningful interactions and potential recruitment. Interestingly, a number of current college coaches who once participated in the showcase as players have now returned to scout the next generation of talent, further strengthening the event's legacy and impact.
