American Analysts: Federer Yields to Djokovic & Nadal as GOATs

Dec 3, 2024 at 1:07 PM
The GOAT debate has long been a topic of discussion in the tennis world. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal have all left an indelible mark on the sport with their remarkable careers. However, with Federer and Nadal now retired, the focus has shifted to comparing their accomplishments.

Former Coach's Pick

During an episode on the 'Tennis Channel podcast', former World No. 1 Jim Courier and Federer's ex-coach Paul Annacone echoed a similar opinion. They named Djokovic as the GOAT, despite his active status. Courier highlighted that Federer was once considered the best, but Nadal unlocked the key to getting inside his game. Djokovic then ended up tracking them down. Annacone expressed that although he doesn't believe in labeling a GOAT, it's difficult to ignore Djokovic's "most accomplished" status.

Head-to-Head Records

Keeping in mind the distinguishing parameters, Courier emphasized the importance of head-to-head records. He stated that Djokovic is slightly better against Federer and Nadal. Nadal, on the other hand, was able to unlock the key to Federer's game. These head-to-head battles have added a new dimension to the GOAT debate.

Serbian Superstar's 2024 Season

Novak Djokovic had a modest 2024 season. He lost the Wimbledon rubber to Carlos Alcaraz for the second consecutive year and was absent from many high-tier events. Despite this, he is determined to lift his Grand Slam drought in 2025. He announced a surprise partnership with Andy Murray for the Australian Open.

New Coaching Partnership

Djokovic aired his update for fans, stating that they have been rivals for 25 years and have pushed each other beyond their limits. They had some of the most epic battles in the sport and were called game-changers and history-makers. Now, Murray will step into his corner as a coach. With no more touring commitments for the year, Djokovic will focus on forming effective tactics against young talents like Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz.
