A remarkable journey in the annals of Alpena High School sports history is set to be honored this June. The 1992-1993 State Champion Hockey Team, known for their extraordinary playoff performance, has been chosen as the Team of the Year for induction into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame. This team's achievement adds another prestigious title to the school’s legacy, following previous accolades in 1981 and 1987.

Despite an inconsistent regular season record of 17-9-2, the Wildcats demonstrated resilience and determination in the playoffs. Their triumphant path included victories over Escanaba, Marquette, Midland, East Kentwood, and Grand Blanc, culminating in a thrilling championship match against Detroit Redford Catholic Central. In this final contest, they turned around a one-goal deficit with two decisive third-period goals, securing their place in history with a 2-1 win. Standout performances from Jeremy Sims in goalkeeping and Brian Stibitz, who received the Mr. Hockey award, were pivotal in their success.

The celebration of this historic team extends beyond the players to include their dedicated coaching staff led by Tony Byers. As fans prepare for the 40th Annual Enshrinement and Dinner at the APlex on June 7, tickets priced at $25 will be available starting April 15. This event not only commemorates the achievements of these athletes but also underscores the enduring spirit of teamwork and perseverance that defines competitive sports. It serves as a reminder of how collective effort can lead to extraordinary accomplishments, inspiring future generations to strive for greatness.
