A major milestone in the fight against food waste has been achieved as ALDI Australia officially becomes a signatory of the Australian Food Pact. This strategic alliance aims to enhance the resilience and sustainability of the country's food system. Through this partnership, ALDI will collaborate with End Food Waste Australia and other industry leaders to implement impactful initiatives that address food waste at every stage of the supply chain.
The collaboration leverages the expertise and resources of the Australian Food Pact to support ALDI in developing high-impact projects that significantly reduce food waste. ALDI has already established partnerships with numerous local food rescue organizations such as OzHarvest and Foodbank, which have facilitated the redistribution of surplus edible food to those in need. In 2024 alone, over 15 million meals were donated through these efforts. Daniel Baker, ALDI Australia’s director of National Sustainability, emphasized the company's commitment to halving its operational food waste by 2030 and contributing to broader industry solutions.
By joining the Australian Food Pact, ALDI is demonstrating its dedication to fostering a more sustainable and resilient food future. The pact brings together over 40 organizations from various sectors of the food industry, united in their mission to cut food waste and improve the efficiency of the food system. Sam Oakden, acting director of Industry Action at End Food Waste Australia, praised ALDI for its leadership in driving change within the retail sector. Together, they aim to unlock significant environmental, economic, and societal benefits for both the organization and the communities it serves. ALDI has also introduced new education and training programs for employees to further reduce waste across all areas of its business.
This partnership signifies a pivotal step towards achieving Australia’s ambitious food waste reduction goals. By working collaboratively, ALDI and its partners are not only addressing a critical environmental issue but also ensuring that valuable resources reach those who need them most. This initiative sets a powerful example of how collective action can lead to meaningful change and a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
