Empowering Veterans Through the Arts

Discovering New Artistic Talents

The Veteran Exhibition at the Emporia Arts Center has long been a platform for showcasing the artistic talents of Kansas veterans. This year's event was no exception, with four new veteran entries joining the impressive lineup of 35 pieces by 15 artists. Sarah Barrett, the EAC Gallery and Art Store Coordinator, expressed her excitement at the influx of new talent, noting, "It's always cool to see new artists be a part of this show, highlighting that their work matters."

Honoring Artistic Excellence

The awards ceremony at the exhibition was a highlight, as the judges recognized the exceptional work of the participating artists. The third-place award went to U.S. Air Force veteran Belinda Schlesener for her fiber art piece "Two Looks at Twins." Second place was awarded to Michael Storrer, a U.S. Air Force veteran, for his captivating gold- and silver-leaf pieces that make up "Unity." Storrer's work also earned him the coveted People's Choice award, as voted by the attendees of the opening day and artist reception.

Celebrating the Best of Show

The 2024 Best of Show award was presented to U.S. Air Force veteran Steve Barnard for his stunning acrylic painting, "Water, Earth and Sky." Barnard's work, which was unable to be present at the reception, showcased the remarkable talent and creativity of the veteran artists showcased in the exhibition.

Inspiring Through Personal Narratives

The artists' personal stories added depth and meaning to their creations. Storrer, the winner of the People's Choice award, shared how his time in the Air Force led him to the marble-izing technique that inspired the designs in "Unity." He also spoke about his desire to create a piece representing each branch of the U.S. military service.Similarly, Schlesener, the third-place award winner, shared how a chance encounter with quilting books at a library book sale sparked her passion for fiber arts and the creation of her award-winning piece. These personal narratives not only highlighted the artists' journeys but also underscored the transformative power of art in the lives of veterans.

Expanding the Reach of the Exhibition

The Emporia Arts Center's efforts to promote the Veteran Exhibition have been instrumental in attracting a diverse range of participants. Sarah Barrett shared that the center sends information letters about the show to American Legions and VFWs across Kansas, ensuring an "all-call, open-call" approach. This outreach led to the inclusion of Michael Kohler, a U.S. Army veteran with a remarkable artistic journey, who discovered the exhibition online and decided to enter.Kohler's intaglio prints on handmade mulberry paper, which depict his experiences in the military, exemplify the depth and breadth of the artistic expressions showcased in the exhibition. As a student at Kansas State University, Kohler's participation highlights the exhibition's ability to reach and inspire veterans at various stages of their artistic pursuits.
