






A recent academic paper has uncovered a fascinating and somewhat amusing trend in advanced artificial intelligence systems: their pronounced affinity for Japanese culture. Researchers observed that when presented with general cultural queries, several prominent large language models, including Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, consistently exhibited a significant emphasis on Japan in their outputs. This discovery suggests that even algorithms, in their pursuit of human-like understanding, can develop preferences that mirror societal trends.
The study, carried out by academics from the University of the Basque Country and Cardiff University, delved into the cultural leanings of AI by posing a diverse range of over 30,000 culturally relevant questions across 24 languages. These questions were intentionally broad, covering topics such as societal beliefs, educational values, traditional arts, and dietary customs, without explicitly mentioning any specific countries. The AI models were then prompted to provide examples, and it was here that Japan frequently emerged as a default reference point, even when the input language was unrelated to the country. This consistent pattern points to an underlying bias embedded within the models' internal knowledge structures.
Further investigation revealed that this cultural predilection is largely influenced by a process known as instruction tuning, which refines pre-trained language models to enhance their utility and responsiveness to user prompts. While base models initially showed a wider array of cultural associations, subsequent fine-tuning—especially supervised fine-tuning using human-curated datasets—significantly amplified references to a limited set of dominant cultures, primarily Japan and the United States. This suggests that the very mechanisms designed to make AI more helpful inadvertently restrict its cultural breadth, leading to a homogenization of perspectives rather than a reflection of global diversity. Addressing this bias is crucial for ensuring that AI technologies can serve a global audience equitably and inclusively.
