Thousands of Audi E-Tron SUVs are being recalled due to a potential fire risk associated with their high-voltage batteries.

The affected vehicles, spanning model years 2019 to 2022, carry a specific type of battery module manufactured by LG Energy Solution. These modules may exhibit a critical self-discharge condition, leading to thermal overload, smoke, and even fire in rare instances.

While a permanent fix is still under development, Audi has outlined a two-pronged approach to address the issue:

1. Software Update: A new onboard diagnostic software is expected in Q3 2024. It will monitor battery performance and alert drivers of potential problems before they escalate. Vehicles with active online data connections will be remotely monitored, and owners will be contacted if critical conditions are detected.
2. Interim Measures: Until the software update arrives, affected vehicles will have their charging capacity limited to 80%. Additionally, models without online data capabilities will undergo dealer diagnostics and potential battery module replacements if necessary.
