The incident occurred around 8:48 p.m. on I-91 near Exit 23, where a 2011 BMW 328xi was traveling southbound in the left lane. For reasons still under investigation, the BMW suddenly swerved and collided with a 2017 Nissan Versa, causing the Nissan to roll over. The impact of the collision sent the Nissan careening into the right center lane, where it struck a 2020 GMC SLT in the right lane. Both vehicles eventually came to a stop on the right shoulder, while the BMW came to rest on the left shoulder.

A Life Cut Short

The driver of the Nissan Versa, identified as Jada Marie Upshaw, 26, of Bloomfield, sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Upshaw was pronounced dead at the hospital. A passenger in the Nissan also suffered minor injuries and was transported for medical treatment.

He was released on a $50,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on October 25, 2024.
